WP1 – Obtaining and characterization of raw materials

1st January 2025

Start and end of the work package: from Month 01 to Month 24

This initial work package is mainly related to the sampling and characterization of the starting raw materials for project work. For this purpose, it is expected that a portable XRF analyzer will be purchased at the very beginning of the project. In order to achieve the set goals, during the first stage of the project, various Bulgarian deposits of marls, raw materials rich in MgO and dumps of industrial waste suitable for the purposes of the project will be visited. A review of the current literature and internet-based information on the topic regarding the status of the deposits and quarries for extraction of the identified raw materials is planned.

After the preliminary study of the deposits and studying of the available documentation concerning the characteristics of the mined raw material, on-site analyzes and sampling, further in-depth research of selected samples and in laboratory conditions is foreseen. These will include, in addition to chemical and phase analysis, a basic study of thermal behaviour, milling behaviour, determination of grain size composition and initial ductility tests.

The end result of this activity is obtaining characterized raw materials in sufficient quantities for the work on the second and third work packages.

An important part of this preliminary stage is the additional literature study, both on the use of marls in the ceramic industry, on the synthesis of anorthite and pyroxene ceramics from industrial waste, as well as on the trends in the use of clinkers in modern construction. This is necessary due to the increasing number of studies in the world in recent years (especially on the second topic).

It is planned to build a project website at this stage, which will be supplemented and updated during the entire period of work on it.
