WP4 – Obtaining and characterizing final samples. Evaluation of the properties of the obtained new materials

1st February 2026

Start and end of the work package: from Month 16 to Month 30

The work on this work package will be related to obtaining and characterizing final samples, as well as determining the properties of the obtained new materials. The optimal compositions and thermal regimes established during the work on WP2 and WP3 will be used.

For this purpose, preliminary preparation of the raw materials (grinding, calcination, homogenization) and preparation of ceramic batches of the final compositions in quantities of more than 5 kg each are foreseen. The resulting batches will then be pressed under the predetermined optimum conditions and fired in electric furnaces with suitable furnace volume.

Geometrical and physical characteristics of the obtained products, their density and water absorption will be determined.

With equipment newly purchased under the project, their frost resistance will also be tested. This research is particularly important for products with a high percentage of industrial waste. Due to the expected high crystallinity, associated with the use of a large percentage of waste, it is possible that some of these samples are characterized by some open porosity.

Abrasive wear resistance and ultimate physico-mechanical properties of the specimens such as flexural tensile strength and compressive strength will be determined. Thermal expansion coefficients are also planned to be investigated.

The compatibility of the obtained products with some basic construction materials that are used together with them during their application will be checked – cement adhesives, additional materials, etc.
